In 1911 Henry Alexander the son of Fords Edinburgh dealer drove a Model T Ford from Cameron Square in Fort William to the top of Ben Nevis. At 4406 feet, Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in Scotland and the impressive stunt massively boosted sales of the car in the UK. In 1961 an owners club was established, ‘The Model T Ford Register of Great Britain’ and the 50th anniversary of the Ben Nevis accent was celebrated. In 2011 the club took a Model T Ford to the summit of Ben Nevis again, this time the group climbed carrying the car in pieces and then reassembled it at the summit. The Ben Nevis Model T Ford Committee was then set up to raise funds for a public sculpture of a Model T Ford to mark the historic mountain ascent.

The replica car was cast in bronze at Powderhall Bronze in Edinburgh by taking mould sections from a complete vintage car. Each mould section of the car was cast in bronze and then all the pieces were reassembled to make the finished car. A life size figure of Henry Alexander in period clothing was also cast in bronze for the driving seat. The sculpture is sited at Cameron Square in Fort William and was unveiled on the 19th of May 2018. The day was marked with with a grand parade of 50 Model T Ford cars along Fort William High Street.
